Keelboat
A keelboat is a small, shallow-draft vessel designed for river travel and cargo transport. Its flat-bottomed hull allows navigation in calm waters, with leeboards aiding stability in open water. Typically carrying 6 passengers, it moves at 1 mph, making it ideal for slow, steady journeys along inland waterways.
On the river, rough and sluggish, the flat rectangle of the keelboat hauls its cargo. Five or six crew work the boat, some dropping long poles in the water to steer. As the waters begin to riffle and speed, one of them lowers a leeboard. The dodger in the boat’s stern stretches over crated cargo and one deckhand smoking a pipe, protecting them from spray.
