If you wish to find out the spell effect before casting the spell, make a Contesting Roll: Magic vs. DC 10 + Level of Spell. Upon success you determine a brief cause of the spell effect. Upon fail, no knowledge is gained.

A flick of your wrist, and the incoming spell veers off course, its trajectory bending impossibly mid-air, striking an alternate target.
