Tiny legs skitter over your skin as a cold weight settles on your chest. A single, unblinking eye glows an eerie blue, pulsing as unseen tendrils creep into your mind, draining something unseen yet essential.
A grotesque fusion of land and sea, the Dream Eater Crab resembles a deep blue crustacean with spindly, spider-like limbs that allow it to scuttle soundlessly across stone and wood. Its shell is smooth yet pockmarked, as if worn by time and shadow. Perched atop its body, replacing what should be a natural carapace, is a single, oversized humanoid eye. The iris shifts in color—deep indigo, sickly green, or glowing crimson—depending on its level of hunger.
These insidious parasites infest dungeons, labyrinthine ruins, and abandoned mines—anywhere with a steady flow of unsuspecting adventurers. They thrive in dark, damp corners, nesting in cracks between ancient bricks or the hollowed remains of long-forgotten treasures. Where foot traffic is heavy, Dream Eater Crabs lurk, waiting for their moment to strike.
Unlike predators that attack outright, Dream Eater Crabs are patient parasites. They do not kill directly but instead wait for their prey to rest. As soon as an adventurer drifts into slumber, these creatures skitter out from their hiding places, crawling onto exposed skin and clamping down with their small, clawed limbs. Their large, singular eye glows with a faint, pulsing light as they weave nightmares into the minds of their victims.
These forced dreams are filled with twisting horrors, draining the sleeper’s vitality and leaving them weak, fatigued, and disoriented upon waking. Prolonged exposure to Dream Eater Crabs can cause hallucinations, paranoia, and an inability to distinguish between waking reality and nightmare-induced illusions.
Dream Eater Crabs are not built for direct combat. Their frail, spindly limbs snap easily, and their shells are brittle compared to other dungeon-dwelling creatures. However, their numbers make them formidable—where one is found, dozens more are likely nearby.
Their greatest weakness is light and fire. Bright, sustained illumination causes their single eye to shrink and forces them into retreat. Fire, even a small torch, will send them scattering, as their bodies are highly sensitive to heat. Some adventurers who frequent dungeons carry lanterns or enchanted candles while they sleep, creating an invisible barrier against these nocturnal leeches.
Dream Eater Crabs are the unseen hand of dungeon death. They do not kill, but they weaken. A fully rested adventurer might survive a spike trap or an ambush; one plagued by these creatures will stumble, react too slowly, or misjudge their strength at a critical moment. Dungeon predators and scavengers often follow Dream Eater Crab infestations, knowing weakened prey will soon fall.
Even some Dungeon Lords have been known to cultivate colonies of these creatures, allowing them to spread through their lairs to soften intruders before true dangers strike.
Wherever adventurers wander, these creatures follow, waiting, watching, and feeding on slumber itself.
