The Default Essence system in
FT is designed to resemble a point buy system commonly found in other TTRPGs. It serves as the standard array for most characters, ensuring better
Encounter and party
Balance.
While the core rules suggest that Default Essences should not exceed a sum of +2 during character creation, your
GM might allow higher stats based on their discretion.
The reason behind this limitation is twofold. Firstly, using the standard array avoids the issue of players feeling disappointed or frustrated when they roll low on their Essences, resulting in a weaker character. Although
GMs often allow rerolls in such cases, it's best to prevent this unnecessary disappointment. Secondly, if some players roll exceptionally high
Essences compared to others, it can create an imbalance within the party dynamic, potentially overshadowing other members. While this imbalance may initially seem fun due to the added randomness, it puts a burden on the
GM to
Balance
Encounters and can lead to strife within the adventuring party, ultimately detracting from the overall enjoyment of the game.
Therefore, in FT, we strongly recommend using the
Default Essence system to establish core stats for characters. The
Focus Psi of the game lies in utilizing your abilities, wit, and good rolls to outmaneuver
Encounters, rather than relying solely on rolling well during character creation. This approach ensures a fair and engaging experience for everyone involved.
