Midas Curse

Curse

The Curse of greed makes anything the afflicted touches Turn to gold.

Effect
Bestowed upon the creature is the ultimate condemnation of greed. Anything the creature touches Turns to gold. It can no longer cast Spells that require material components, as any components it attempts to use Turn to gold. An object touched by a creature cursed in this way has its weight doubled, in addition to the following complications:

  • Weapons Attacks with this weapon are made with DIS.
  • Armor A creature wearing this armor can’t add its Dexterity Modifier to its Attacks, Checks, Saves, or AC.
  • Magical Items The item becomes cursed as well, forcing any creature that touches it to make a DC 15 Charisma Save. Failure: The creature contracts the Midas Curse.

Midas Reach: You can make an Unarmed Strike against a creature as an Action. On a hit, the Target must make a DC 15 Body Save. Failure: The creature is Restrained as it begins to Turn to gold. Success: The creature is not affected by Midas Reach. A creature Restrained in this way can repeat this Save at the end of each of its Turns. A creature that fails this Save 3 times is Petrified in gold for years.

Transmission & Contraction
It’s impossible to contract Midas Curse naturally. When a creature commits an act of absolute greed (GM’s discretion), it contracts the Midas Curse the next time it touches a valuable object, turning it into gold. Usually this is decided by a divine being. The only other way to contract the Curse is through a Wish Fulfillment.

Cures & Treatments
There are no natural cures to Midas Curse. However, there are ways to temporarily nullify the Curse. Casting Remove Curse undoes the Curse for a number of days equal to half the level of the Spell slot expended. Creatures Petrified by the Reach of a cursed individual can be restored to life by Restoration, Major or Remove Curse cast at 5th-level or higher.

Through an act of absolute generosity (GM’s discretion), the cursed creature may appeal to the gods that invoked the Curse upon them. Doing so can remove the Curse and, depending on the nature of the cure, objects and creatures turned to gold may return to their original form.

DC Tip: This Curse can have a drastic impact on the economy of the game when introduced too early in the campaign. I would suggest waiting until higher levels to introduce this Curse to avoid the issues the extra gold may bring. Alternatively you could have the material be a rusted “worthless” type of metal instead.
