Cymbals are thin, round bronze plates struck together or with sticks to produce bright, crashing or shimmering sounds of indefinite pitch. Paired hi-hats provide rhythmic accents, while larger crash and ride cymbals add dramatic emphasis or sustained wash. Skilled cymbalists control volume and timbre through technique.
