Preparing Lye: Lye was made by leaching water through wood ash, a process known as lye-making. The resulting liquid, called lye water or potassium hydroxide solution, was collected. Alternatively, soda ash (sodium carbonate) could be extracted from certain plant ashes and combined with water to create lye.
