Fins and spines glisten with slick, mottled skin, eyes like molten abyss, claws scraping wood as it coils along the hull, muscles rippling beneath translucent flesh, dripping brine, hunger manifesting in every twitching movement.

Taint-Spawnling
Creature Sub Type
364.94

When an undead creature lingers too long in absolute darkness, it does not remain unchanged. Deprived of light and left to fester in shadow, its body twists into something more primal—stronger, faster, and far more aggressive.

These are known as Taint-Spawn — predators of the dark that trade stability for raw, violent evolution.

Appearance

Their forms are visibly warped by prolonged exposure to darkness:

  1. Flesh appears stretched, split, or fused, as if constantly reshaping
  2. Bones protrude at unnatural angles, sometimes forming natural armor or jagged weapons
  3. Limbs may elongate or distort, allowing for unnatural reach and movement
  4. Eyes, if present, are often sunken or glowing faintly, adapted to total darkness
  5. Skin is pale to the point of translucence, thin and fragile-looking… yet deceptively resilient
  6. When moving, their bodies twitch and coil like something barely held together

Behavior

Mutated undead are no longer mindless wanderers—they are hunters.

  1. They lurk in lightless environments: caves, tunnels, ruins, abandoned villages
  2. They remain motionless for long periods, conserving energy until prey enters their domain
  3. Once aware of a target, they stalk silently, using darkness as full concealment
  4. They favor ambush tactics, striking suddenly with overwhelming force
  5. At night, they may roam freely beyond their lairs, extending their hunting grounds
  6. Pack Mentality: A lone Taint-Spawn is rarely alone. Their hunting is coordinated in instinctual swarms—spot one, and it is highly likely others are nearby, flanking or waiting in the shadows to strike

Mutation Effects

Extended time in darkness enhances them in unnatural ways:

  1. Increased Strength — capable of tearing through armor or barricades
  2. Heightened Speed — sudden bursts of movement, often on all fours or with erratic lunges
  3. Adaptive Growth — claws, bone spikes, or reinforced limbs form as needed
  4. Darkvision — perfect awareness in total darkness
  5. Each Mutated Undead may appear slightly different depending on how its body has adapted

Light Sensitivity

Their greatest strength is also their greatest weakness:

  1. Direct exposure to light causes their flesh to smolder and burn
  2. Prolonged illumination leads to rapid deterioration, cracking skin and exposed tissue
  3. Bright, sustained light can force them into retreat—or destroy them entirely
  4. Because of this, they avoid light at all costs, becoming most active at night or in deep shadow
