A river-serpent coils in heavy silence, scales slick as wet slate and veined with rust-red streaks like old blood. Its jaws hinge wide to show jagged teeth and a long, raw tongue tasting the air. Pale mist ribbons from its body, curling and clinging around stones as it slides, cold and patient, through the shallows.
Wellwyrms are serpents originally touched by cruel Fey masters. The wyrms live in shallow waters where landdwelling creatures frequent, such as wells and watering holes, lying in wait to coil around unsuspecting victims. Wellwyrms then drag their prey into water, or into burrows they dig under seemingly safe ground, to drown or suffocate.
The sound of a hunting horn drives wellwyrms into a panicked frenzy.
