The festerhulk's titanic frame heaves forward, its hide a bulging mosaic of bruised blue-violet shelf mushrooms, stacked like fractured plates over ribs melted to slime. A lipless maw yawns wide, black-mold tongue lolling between purple mycelium veils that flutter in its hollow chest. Ropey root-tendrils writhe from the void, scattering dirty spores that cling like frost and burrow into raw flesh. Pale new caps glisten slick on its limbs, sucking rot from within, while sunlight singes their edges to brittle char.
Festerhulks are dead giants whose corpses are infested with fungus engorged by the magic of decay. This fungus has consumed and replaced much of the giant’s flesh and now animates the corpse. The heads of these giants are often completely overtaken by repulsive mushrooms and other fungal growths. The spores given off by their infestation can spread to victims killed by festerhulks, giving rise to further Undead.
Festerhulks shrink from sunlight, which harms the fungus that animates them.
