The Deeps: South Road – The Unfinished Road of the Dwarves

Campaign Level Levels 1516

Once a promising trade route, this southern road was abandoned by the dwarves in their ambition to connect to a distant human kingdom. The work was left incomplete, leaving crumbled bridges, treacherous tunnels, and gaping pits. In the centuries since, an otherworldly presence has claimed these depths: the Cinder Maw, a fearsome molten insect-like creature that burrows through stone and radiates intense heat.

The area is now a volcanic wasteland beneath the earth, where lava seeps through cracked walls and glowing embers flicker like sinister eyes in the dark. The Cinder Maw is not alone—its Smolderlings, fiery insectoid spawn, infest the tunnels, driving off most intruders. The only survivors are a group of desperate Dark Elves, who have been cornered near the entrance and seek aid—or offer treachery, depending on how they perceive the adventurers.

The players must navigate this fiery labyrinth, make dangerous choices about alliances, and ultimately confront the Cinder Maw in its blazing lair.

Key Themes

  1. Unfinished Engineering: The tunnels are structurally unstable, with collapsing bridges, incomplete carvings, and crude scaffolding.
  2. Fire and Heat: The environment is suffocatingly hot, with hazards like lava flows, boiling steam vents, and pools of molten rock.
  3. Desperation and Betrayal: The trapped Dark Elves may prove useful—or turn on the adventurers at the first sign of weakness.
  4. Monstrous Foe: The Cinder Maw is a formidable opponent, combining raw strength with an ability to manipulate the fiery environment.

Adventure Hooks

Dark Elf Plea

As the party approaches the southern road, they encounter a fleeing Dark Elf scout, wounded and terrified. She claims her companions are trapped by “fiery demons” and begs for help. She offers a precious gemstone as payment but may later reveal ulterior motives (e.g., the gemstone is cursed or stolen).

A Relic Lost

An ancient dwarven smithing guild seeks to recover a Molten Key, rumored to lie somewhere within the unfinished tunnels. The key is said to unlock a hidden dwarven forge capable of crafting legendary weapons.

The Shadow’s Whisper

The Darkness has taken interest in the Cinder Maw and sent one of its shadowy agents to observe—or perhaps recruit—the creature. The agent’s presence complicates matters, introducing potential conflict or an uneasy alliance.

Adventure Highlights

Dark Elf Dilemma

Near the entrance, the party encounters a group of Dark Elves cornered by Smolderlings. They are desperate for aid but remain cautious and arrogant. Their leader, Captain Vaelis T’rell, offers vague promises of treasure or a favor in exchange for help. If the party aids them, they prove useful in combat, but betrayal may follow later.

Environmental Hazards

  1. Lava Flows: Narrow pathways above bubbling lava that threaten to crumble under weight or attacks.
  2. Steam Geysers: Sudden bursts of scalding steam that erupt from cracks in the walls.
  3. Unstable Tunnels: Sections of the tunnel collapse under heavy impact or fire-based attacks, potentially trapping or injuring players.

The Cinder Maw’s Spawn

The Smolderlings act as scouts and guardians. They attack in swarms, utilizing the environment by setting areas ablaze or collapsing ledges to trap players.

The Cinder Maw’s Lair

The final chamber is a colossal cavern with molten streams crisscrossing the floor, creating narrow stone walkways. The Cinder Maw bursts from the ground mid-fight, sending lava sprays and stone shards flying.

Potential Endings

  1. Victory: The party defeats the Cinder Maw and claims the Molten Key as a reward. The tunnels are now cleared, allowing them to explore deeper into the mountain.
  2. Betrayal: The Dark Elves, if aided, may attempt to steal any rewards or ambush the party once the Cinder Maw is slain.
  3. Partial Success: The party escapes with their lives but fails to defeat the Cinder Maw, leaving the southern road still blocked by its presence.
