Once a promising trade route, this southern road was abandoned by the dwarves in their ambition to connect to a distant human kingdom. The work was left incomplete, leaving crumbled bridges, treacherous tunnels, and gaping pits. In the centuries since, an otherworldly presence has claimed these depths: the Cinder Maw, a fearsome molten insect-like creature that burrows through stone and radiates intense heat.
The area is now a volcanic wasteland beneath the earth, where lava seeps through cracked walls and glowing embers flicker like sinister eyes in the dark. The Cinder Maw is not alone—its Smolderlings, fiery insectoid spawn, infest the tunnels, driving off most intruders. The only survivors are a group of desperate Dark Elves, who have been cornered near the entrance and seek aid—or offer treachery, depending on how they perceive the adventurers.
The players must navigate this fiery labyrinth, make dangerous choices about alliances, and ultimately confront the Cinder Maw in its blazing lair.
As the party approaches the southern road, they encounter a fleeing Dark Elf scout, wounded and terrified. She claims her companions are trapped by “fiery demons” and begs for help. She offers a precious gemstone as payment but may later reveal ulterior motives (e.g., the gemstone is cursed or stolen).
An ancient dwarven smithing guild seeks to recover a Molten Key, rumored to lie somewhere within the unfinished tunnels. The key is said to unlock a hidden dwarven forge capable of crafting legendary weapons.
The Darkness has taken interest in the Cinder Maw and sent one of its shadowy agents to observe—or perhaps recruit—the creature. The agent’s presence complicates matters, introducing potential conflict or an uneasy alliance.
Near the entrance, the party encounters a group of Dark Elves cornered by Smolderlings. They are desperate for aid but remain cautious and arrogant. Their leader, Captain Vaelis T’rell, offers vague promises of treasure or a favor in exchange for help. If the party aids them, they prove useful in combat, but betrayal may follow later.
The Smolderlings act as scouts and guardians. They attack in swarms, utilizing the environment by setting areas ablaze or collapsing ledges to trap players.
The final chamber is a colossal cavern with molten streams crisscrossing the floor, creating narrow stone walkways. The Cinder Maw bursts from the ground mid-fight, sending lava sprays and stone shards flying.
