Tanukifolk
Ancestry

The Tanukifolk are a race of humanoid raccoons who dwell in the mist-veiled forests and craggy mountain slopes of Zin. Playful, elusive, and impossibly cunning, they are known as both sages and scoundrels—masters of disguise who weave deception and laughter in equal measure. Though they often appear whimsical, their kind harbors ancient wisdom and power tied to the primal spirits of earth and illusion.

A common saying throughout the forested provinces warns travelers and nobles alike:

“If she looks too good to be true—she’s likely a Tanuki.”

Appearance

Tanukifolk possess a balance of beast and man—short, furred bodies with rounded faces, masked eyes, and thick tails that twitch with emotion. Their fur ranges from chestnut to gray-black, with brighter markings on their cheeks or chest that often indicate lineage. Most wear simple robes or layered garments, adorned with charms and trinkets gathered from their adventures—or “acquired” from the unwary.

When disguised, their human forms are impossibly flawless: skin without blemish, eyes bright as polished amber, and smiles that hint at secrets. Yet those who know what to look for may notice subtle tells—a flicking ear, a tail poorly hidden, or a scent of damp moss and rice wine.

Society and Culture

Life among the Tanukifolk is built upon freedom, mirth, and cleverness. They form loose-knit clans across the forests of Zin, where every member is expected to contribute through trickery, trade, or travel. Settlements are often concealed by illusionary veils—villages that vanish when approached, leaving only laughter echoing in the distance.

They are merchants, storytellers, and illusionists, often visiting human towns under the guise of travelers or nobles. To them, mischief is an art form—a test of wit rather than cruelty. Swindling a pompous lord or fooling a greedy merchant is considered a sport, especially if it ends in laughter rather than bloodshed.

Despite their trickster nature, Tanukifolk are fiercely protective of their kin and sacred groves. Those who threaten their forests quickly learn that humor and kindness are but the surface of their cunning.

Magic of Transformation

The hallmark of all Tanukifolk is their Transformation Magic, a mystical art passed down since the earliest ages. Through rhythmic chants, gestures, or simply a mischievous thought, a Tanukifolk can alter their shape—taking on human form, mimicking beasts, or even blending into stone.

Personality

Cheerful, curious, and impossible to predict, Tanukifolk are guided by whim as much as instinct. They are natural performers, storytellers, and gamblers who cherish good company and good food. Yet beneath the laughter lies an unspoken depth—a quiet reverence for nature, for the spirits that guide them, and for the ever-turning dance of truth and illusion.

They may be pranksters, but never fools. Every laugh hides a lesson, and every illusion a test.

In the World of Zin

Among humans and other races, Tanukifolk are met with mixed emotions—admiration, suspicion, and occasionally, envy. Some rulers hire them as spies or entertainers; others post warnings at their gates forbidding their entry. Yet even the most cautious townsfolk secretly hope to meet one—for where a Tanukifolk passes, stories are born.

In adventuring parties, they often serve as scouts, spies, or illusionists. Some wander alone, seeking the wisdom of distant spirits or the thrill of new tricks to master.

Quote of the Tanukifolk

"Stone may stand firm, but it never laughs. Laughter, my friend, is the true sign of life." Ebiro of the Mossveil Clan, Tanuki Wanderer of the Eastern Woods
